"Jack Birch, the team's director of hockey operations, said the Panthers have accepted an invitation from the New York Rangers to play in the first NHL-sanctioned game on the island.
The exhibition game, to be played in San Juan's new 18,000-seat arena, would be played Sept. 23.
''The game hasn't been confirmed yet, but we're hoping this all gets done by the end of the week,'' Birch said in a telephone interview Tuesday. ``It's definitely on the books. We accepted the invitation. All the details have to be worked out. I think it will be neat to play a game there.''
The Panthers preseason schedule hasn't been released yet, but the team is used to playing in non-NHL markets. Last year, the Panthers played Minnesota at the University of North Dakota."
